Empowering Gibraltar: GSLP Liberals' Sporting Legacy of Accessibility and Achievements.
The GSLP Liberals have delivered an incredible amount of state of the art sporting facilities which will be used by many generations. We have invested heavily in our sporting facilties to offer a wide range of world class facilities to our community. Many of these facilities are also used for community events such as fashion shows and concerts which have hosted world class artists such as Andrea Bocelli. We are immensely proud to have been able to host the Island Games in Gibraltar and put Gibraltar on the map. Although all facilities are fully accessible, we have also specifically catered for those who have any sort of disability by creating the Special Olympics Sports Complex which is used by the World Wide Special Olympics Organisation as an example of inclusivity.
We have focussed on the ‘Out Reach’ programme specifically created for the benefit of children with some sort of physical or mental disability. Grants access and scheduled programmes at all of the facilities. We work carefully with the Care Agency.
After four years since its use during the 2019 Island Games, the Lathbury Sports Complex has been officially inaugurated, representing a monumental achievement for Gibraltar's sports landscape. The Chief Minister and Minister for Sport hailed it as a 'state-of-the-art' facility and a lasting 'legacy' project.
The Lathbury Complex boasts an 8-lane IAAF approved Athletics track, a 52m Olympic-Sized FINA approved swimming pool, and a versatile playing area suitable for Athletics Field events, football, and other activities. The facility also houses conference, media, medical, and anti-doping rooms, further enhancing its capabilities. The government has indicated that spectator capacity, with 794 outdoors and 288 indoors, can be increased as needed.
Europa Sports Park, formerly a Ministry of Defence cricket pitch, has evolved into a dynamic multi-purpose stadium in Gibraltar. In 2019, it proudly hosted the grand opening ceremony of the Island Games, setting the stage for numerous exciting events to come, including the annual Gibraltar Music Festival.
This versatile facility serves as the home ground for various sports, including cricket, darts, gymnastics, squash, Esports and more. It is the proud base of the Gibraltar national rugby union team, where they not only play their home games but also utilise the venue for training.
One of the most notable events hosted at Europa Sports Park was the WBC interim heavyweight championship rematch between Alexander Povetkin and Dillian Whyte on 27 March 2021, further solidifying its status as a premier sporting venue in Gibraltar.
